Google’s Android Opens Doors for RMG Apps in Three Markets; Also Announces Fee Change

Android has announced that it will officially allow real-money gaming (RMG) apps to be available on the Google Play store in Brazil, India, and Mexico starting June 30, 2024. This decision comes as a response to the strong demand for such products in these markets.

The company also revealed that it had previously allowed developers to trial RMG apps in India and Mexico, and they will be able to continue offering their pilot products until the official launch. Additionally, Android will be launching expanded RMG support in June, with plans to expand to more countries in the future.

Android’s director of global trust and safety partnerships, Karan Gambhir, expressed his enthusiasm for the new approach, stating that it will provide new business opportunities to developers worldwide while prioritizing user safety. He also emphasized that developers currently participating in RMG pilots in India and Mexico will be able to continue offering their apps on Google Play.

Developers in the Google Play Pilot Program in India will have their grace period extended, enabling their pilot rummy and daily fantasy sports (DFS) apps to remain on the platform until the official approval of RMG apps. They will then be able to distribute RMG apps beyond rummy and DFS to users in India as long as they comply with local laws.

Similarly, RMG developers in Mexico will be allowed to continue offering their trial DFS program until June 30, after which they can distribute such apps on Google Play to users in Mexico.

While these changes present new opportunities for developers, they are also subject to strict policies, including age-gating and geo-gating requirements, as well as user safety and transparency measures enforced by Google Play. Additionally, Google Play will be introducing changes to its service fee model to align with the economics of the industry.

Gambhir hopes that these updated policies will encourage developers to work with Google Play, grow their businesses, and launch new games. Android promises to share more news about the upcoming changes soon.
