Massachusetts Casinos and Betting Operators Report Impressive December Performance

The latest report from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) revealed a strong performance from licensed sports betting and casino operators in December. The total taxable gaming revenue for the month was $163.6 million, marking an increase from the $143 million reported in November.

According to the breakdown released by the MGC, revenue from retail and online sports wagering reached $60.6 million in December. The majority of the revenue, however, came from the state’s three casinos – MGM Springfield, Plainridge Park Casino, and Encore Boston Harbor – totaling $103 million. Sports betting contributed $12 million in taxes, while the land-based casinos were responsible for $29 million in taxes last month.

The MGC also provided a breakdown of the total casino revenue reported in December. Encore Boston Harbor led the way with $65.8 million in table and slots gross gaming revenue (GGR), generating $16.5 million in taxes. MGM Springfield followed with $23.6 million in total GGR, contributing $5.9 million in taxes. Plainridge Park Casino, a slots-only venue, reported $13.6 million in GGR, resulting in $6.7 million in taxes.

When it comes to sports betting, online activities accounted for the majority of taxable gaming revenue. Online betting operators generated $59.3 million in revenue and contributed $11.9 million in taxes to the state. In contrast, retail betting operators only raised $1.3 million in revenue, generating $194,011 in taxes for Massachusetts last month.

DraftKings emerged as the leading sports betting operator in Massachusetts, with a betting handle of $315.9 million and $29.9 million in revenue. FanDuel also performed well, posting a betting handle of $187.4 million and revenue of $19.3 million. ESPN Bet, a recently launched sportsbook, reported a betting handle of $49,981,962 and revenue of $4.1 million in December.

Overall, the latest report from the MGC indicates a strong performance from both sports betting and casino operators in Massachusetts, with online activities playing a significant role in driving taxable gaming revenue.
